#1 Blonde Ponytail Doll. Follow Me on Pinterest

The highest priced item was this #1 Blonde Ponytail Doll.  She sold for $8703.  She came wearing Friday Night Date  – the seller stated she was a dressed display doll, which is interesting because Friday Night Date didn’t come out until 1960 and by 1960 we were up to the #3 ponytail already.  Anyway, she also came with a display doll pink box and stand.

Barbie Gay Parisenne NRFB Follow Me on Pinterest
Barbie’s Gay Parisienne #964 (1959) is considered one of the “Holy Grails” of Vintage Barbie Collecting.  It was one of two ensembles that was only made for one year – Barbie’s first year – 1959. It is very hard to find.  I don’t think I have ever seen one still in the original box before.  This one received 46 bids and sold for $5,457.98 in May 2014.

Betty’s Gorgeous Number 1 Ponytail Barbie

Number One Vintage Ponytail Barbie

I just had to share this beautiful photo because to many of us it represents the ultimate in vintage Barbie collecting!   Betty P. shared it recently in our Barbie & Friends group.

I think this photo is sheer perfection and a perfect representation of the allusive beauty of the number 1 dolls.

How about you?  Is this your ultimate Barbie?  If not, what is?

Highlight: Campus Belle Dress Variation

Campus Belle Barbie Dress - Rare Dark Blue Variation

When I recently updated the Vintage Barbie Belle Dress / Campus Bell page on the website, I learned of a very rare Campus Belle variation that was recently sold.

The silk shantung dress is commonly seen in rose pink and medium blue and even those are hard to find!   This variation, a very dark blue, recently sold for $285.

None of the four reference books I consulted mentioned this variation and I have never seen it before.  If you have seen one before, please tell us in the comments below!

You can see the updated page, as well as a picture of the regular blue next to this one  here.

Ken in Cheerful Chef on Barbie and Friends

Vintage Ken in Cheerful Chef.

This picture of Ken, by Yvette, was the most popular picture this week on Barbie & Friends, one of the largest online Barbie communities.

We currently have 753 members who have shared 7651 photos, in addition to forums, blog posts and trading and selling groups. The best part is friendship and if you love Barbie, we’d love to have you join in the fun!

You can find us here – Barbie & Friends.

Ken is wearing a hard to find Fashion Pak item called Cheerful Chef, made from 1964 thru 1967.  Yvette said it took her several months to collect all of the pieces.

1965 Commercial – The Barbie Look

I don’t know why I get such a thrill from old Barbie commercials, but I do! From the comments and likes on Facebook when I have shared them there, you love them too!

I wanted to share one today that is new to me. It is called “The Barbie Look” and it is from 1965. It features the American Girl Barbie and Bendable Leg Midge, Ken, Allan and Skipper.

In addition to the dolls. it also gives a great overview of the clothing and furniture that year. It is a fast and fun commercial – who knew they were rapping in 1965?

(“You can tell it’s Mattel, it’s swell!+ was used on all Mattel products and ads from 1959 through 1970.)

Barbie Booklets 1961 & 1962

1961 Barbie Booklet - Barbie & Ken on the cover

Last week we started looking at Vintage Barbie Booklets by looking at the first three booklets from 1959 and 1960.  Today we’ll look at the two booklets that picture only Barbie and Ken on the cover.  They are from 1961 and 1962.

The 1961 edition had the same pink cover as the first three, but also had Ken on the cover. (It is a much lighter pink in person.)

There were two versions of the catalog made, one had a date on the cover, the other did not and otherwise they were identical.
