Hilary & Haylie Duff to Design Barbie Clothes for Japanese Dolls

HILARY DUFF has added doll clothing designer to her impressive resume after being asked to create a new line for Barbies in Japan.

The pop star/actress and sister HAYLIE, both huge Barbie fans, have been asked by toymaker Mattel to design a mini-wardrobe for their Japanese likenesses. Hilary says, “Barbies have really cool couture clothes in Japan… They made Barbies of Haylie and I and we got to design the clothes and it was really cool.

“(Asian designer) ANNA SUI has a Barbie doll and all these designer clothes so we felt special.”

“Largest Barbie Collection Ever” to be Auctioned by Christie’s

Thought to be the largest single-owner Barbie collection ever auctioned, the Dutch collection will be sold in September by Christie’s of London. The collection of over 4,000 dolls is said to include virtually every Barbie ever produced, from the 1959 #1 ponytail to the dolls of the 2000s.

Christie’s will sell the rare dolls individually and the others in lots of 10 to 12 dolls. The bidding for the lots will start at around $100 to $200. They estimate that the collection is worth approximately $185,000.

The whole collection will be free to view when it is put on display on September 23, three days before the auction.

Mattel’s Barbie Troubles Continue

Despite a better than expected financial report for Mattel for the 2nd quarter 2006, Barbie sales fell 1%. Barbie sales have dropped for 11th consecutive quarters (that is almost 3 years).

In this Businessweek article, industry experts disagree over whether Barbie sales are stabilizing, or if Barbie’s time has come and gone.

Johnny Depp on Playing with Barbie Dolls

From The Bosh…..

Johnny Depp loves playing with Barbie dolls.
The ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’ actor – who has two children, seven-year-old Lily Rose and Jack, four, with French singer Vanessa Paradis – says playing with the girlie dolls has become his favourite pastime.

He said: “I do like playing with Barbies. It’s a great thing to do with your kids.
“Once, I was exploring different characters with the Barbies and my daughter didn’t like it. At one point she said, ‘Dad, please just stop, don’t do that, just do your regular voice’.”

Reinventing Barbie: “There was no wow. Barbie should always have a wow.”

Barbie’s new dad is searching for the doll’s missing wow.

Mattel’s Neil Friedman has the tall order of revitalizing what is still America’s best-selling fashion doll and perhaps the toy industry’s most iconic product. The trouble is, he’s at least the third person in the last five years to have that responsibility, and nothing so far has worked.

”Barbie lacked focus, lacked vision — even a true, cohesive advertising campaign,” Friedman said in his first interview about his plans since becoming president of Mattel Brands in mid-October. “It was pretty obvious that there wasn’t any excitement there. There was no wow. Barbie should always have a wow.”

Valentino Barbie to Fund European AIDS Research

Barbie dolls wearing replicas of the Valentino gown worn by Julia Roberts when she won the 2001 Academy Award will be sold at an AIDS benefit in Austria.

Roberts has described the dress as one of her all-time favorites.

Only 300 of the Valentino Barbie dolls were created and will be sold for $500 each Sunday at Vienna’s annual Life Ball. The ball is Europe’s largest fundraising event for AIDS research.

Roberts won the 2001 Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Erin Brokovich.

Valentino follows Giorgio Armani in designing for Barbie. Armani designed an evening gown for the Mattel doll in 2003 and donated the profits to AIDS research and the fight against youth poverty.

Barbie Mod Shoe Reproduction Pack

This cool reproduction of a vintage Mod-Era Barbie and Stacey shoe pack will be available in June 2006.

It includes 4 square toed, 4 bow, 2 closed toe heels and white go-go boots. The red closed toe shoes can be difficult (and costly) to find, these might make a good alternative.

These should also fit Francie and friends. If they are true to form, the bow shoes should be “squishy” – no word on that yet.

I know I will want to have one to use and one to display!

There are also several Mod Era Barbie reproductions – Mod era Twist-n-Turn Barbies with “Made For Each Other” (November 2006) and “All That Jazz” (July 2006) coming out this year. Stay tuned for more…..
